A LITTLE PREPARATION
Know what you have, protect what matters and make the switch a decision you understand.
Open the migration guideRecord the platform and version, current host, storage use and any database. Note important plugins, licences, forms, redirects and connected services.
Check whether you can export the files and database. Some hosted builders restrict exports. Keep access details private until a secure transfer method has been agreed.
Arrange a complete backup and a way to restore it. Keep your current hosting active while the new copy is reviewed.
Identify your registrar and DNS provider. Preserve records used by your email service, including MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC, alongside other relevant subdomains and verifications.
Orders, bookings and submissions may continue while a copy is prepared. Agree how the final changes will be synchronized and whether a maintenance window is needed.
Confirm the final copy, reviewed DNS changes and HTTPS readiness. Define who approves the move and how it will be monitored.
Keep a recovery plan. Once the new site accepts fresh data, switching back to an older copy may lose changes; recovery needs to account for those writes.
